"President Obama didn't wait long after Tuesday's devastating elections to give critics another reason to question his leadership, but this time the subject matter was more grim than a pair of governorships.
After news broke out of the shooting at the Fort Hood Army post in Texas, the nation watched in horror as the toll of dead and injured climbed. The White House was notified immediately and by late afternoon, word went out that the president would speak about the incident prior to a previously scheduled appearance. At about 5 p.m., cable stations went to the president. The situation called for not only his trademark eloquence, but also grace and perspective.
But instead of a somber chief executive offering reassuring words and expressions of sympathy and compassion, viewers saw a wildly disconnected and inappropriately light president making introductory remarks. At the event, a Tribal Nations Conference hosted by the Department of Interior's Bureau of Indian affairs, the president thanked various staffers and offered a "shout-out" to "Dr. Joe Medicine Crow -- that Congressional Medal of Honor winner." Three minutes in, the president spoke about the shooting, in measured and appropriate terms. Who is advising him?"

Agree with Beaver. It sucks, but the whole country if fucked up and more people than that die everyday from violence, and nothing is ever commented on from the President. Why should this be any different? It just shows that our military bases are weak and maybe he didn't want to shed light on the fact so that every bomb toting fuckwad would know that it would be easy to kill tons of people at our army bases?

why does obama have to atone for the way he handled this? bush never had to for the way he kept reading to the children and not acting immediately on 9/11. this is no different. if you think it is, you're a republican lemming with sean hannity's brain.

I disagree with this. This attack was basically unstoppable and not a fair reflection of the security on bases (I do find it curious that there were civilian police on duty though - We always had MP's, and too goddamn many of them for that matter). Every base I have been on required at least a base sticker to get in. You or I can't just drive through the gate, shoot up the place and ride off into the sunset. This whole event just goes to show that if a terrorist has a plan, it is usually all but impossible to stop them (especially if they are suicidal). I think it is a miracle we don't have more "terrorism" in the US.
As for Obama, I am not a fan, but this is really mountains from molehill shit. He acknowledged the tragedy, what more do you want? I don't get what the big deal is. Comparing this to the 911 reaction is totally apples to oranges. Bush really fucked that up in my opinion. There you are talking hundreds if not thousand of civilian lives. This all went down on army base, what do you expect him to do, send in the National Guard???
Still, it's a tragic situation, but sadly, at the end of the day, what really needs to be addressed in all of this (PTSD awareness and treatment) looks to be swept aside and replaced with "more important" issues like the security of military institutions and how the president arranged a speech in the aftermath (when nothing could be done anyway). You guys are right, this country can be pretty fucked up sometimes.
